SEO vs AEO vs GEO vs LLMO: The 2026 Acronyms, Explained
AEO, GEO, LLMO and AI SEO are mostly the same discipline sold under four names. Here's what genuinely differs — and the 20% that isn't just SEO with a new label.
AEO, GEO, LLMO and "AI SEO" all describe the same underlying shift: search is moving from a list of links to a generated answer, and businesses need to appear inside that answer. The four terms overlap heavily. Around 80% of the work is disciplined SEO done well. The remaining 20% is genuinely new, and that's the part worth understanding before you buy anything.
The four terms, defined
| Term | Stands for | Central question |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search Engine Optimization | Does my page rank in the results list? |
| AEO | Answer Engine Optimization | Is my content the direct answer given to a question? |
| GEO | Generative Engine Optimization | Am I cited when an AI generates an answer? |
| LLMO | Large Language Model Optimization | Does the model itself know and recommend my brand? |
In practice, agencies use these interchangeably. If a proposal defines them as four separate services with four separate retainers, that is a pricing strategy, not a methodology.
Where they genuinely differ
Strip away the marketing and there are three real distinctions.
- Ranking vs being quoted. Classic SEO wins a position. AEO and GEO win a citation inside an answer. A page ranked seventh can still be the source an AI quotes — and a page ranked second can be ignored. The optimisation targets are not identical.
- Pages vs passages. Search engines rank pages; language models retrieve passages. That changes how you write: self-contained sections that answer one question completely, with the answer in the first sentence, beat a beautifully argued essay where the point arrives in paragraph nine.
- Content vs entity. LLMO is the one meaningfully different discipline. It's less about any page and more about whether the model has a clear, consistent, well-sourced understanding of your brand as an entity — built from thousands of mentions across the web, not from your website alone. You influence it indirectly, through presence in the sources models read.
What stays exactly the same
Don't let anyone tell you SEO is dead and you must start over. These all still matter, and they matter more:
- Crawlable, fast, technically sound pages. AI crawlers are less forgiving than Googlebot, not more.
- Genuine topical depth. Models cite sources that comprehensively cover a subject.
- Authority and links. Being cited by trusted sites is still the strongest trust signal available.
- Structured data. Schema markup helps machines parse meaning — that was always the point.
- Accurate, consistent business information everywhere it appears.
The genuinely new work
- Answer-first formatting. Lead every section with a direct, quotable answer in one or two sentences, then elaborate. Models extract the top of a section.
- Question-shaped content architecture. Build around the sentences people actually say to an AI, which are longer and more conversational than keywords.
- Entity consistency. Identical name, address, phone and description across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and every listing. Organization schema with
sameAslinks tying them together. - AI crawler access. Explicit robots.txt decisions for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, plus an
llms.txtfile summarising your site. - Third-party source seeding. Models lean heavily on listicles, directories, review sites and community discussion. Presence there moves the needle far more than another blog post on your own domain.
- Citation tracking. Monitoring mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews, because none of it appears in Google Search Console.
Why your Search Console traffic can fall while nothing is wrong
When an AI Overview answers the question on the results page, the user gets what they needed without clicking. You still got the impression. You did not get the session. This is the "impressions up, clicks down" pattern many businesses are seeing, and it is not always a ranking problem — sometimes it's the answer being consumed upstream of your site. The response is to make sure that when the answer is consumed, your brand is named inside it.
What your business should actually do
- Run an AI visibility audit to establish where you stand across the major assistants.
- Fix technical access — crawler permissions, rendering, schema, llms.txt.
- Restructure your highest-intent pages to answer-first format.
- Build entity consistency across every place your business is listed.
- Earn presence in the third-party sources your audit showed AI actually citing.
- Re-measure monthly against your baseline.
