Shopify Development Cost in India (2026): A Real Pricing Breakdown
A Shopify store in India costs anywhere from ₹40,000 to ₹8,00,000+. The build fee is often the smallest number in the total — here's the full picture.
A Shopify store built in India typically costs ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000 for a well-executed theme-based build, and ₹2,00,000 to ₹8,00,000+ for custom development. But the build fee is only part of what you'll spend. Subscription, apps, transaction fees and maintenance often exceed the development cost within the first year, and almost nobody budgets for them properly.
Development cost by build type
| Build type | Typical cost (India) | Timeline | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theme setup & configuration | ₹25,000 – ₹60,000 | 1–2 weeks | Testing a product, small catalogues, tight budgets |
| Customised premium theme | ₹60,000 – ₹1,50,000 | 3–5 weeks | Most D2C brands launching properly |
| Custom theme from design | ₹1,50,000 – ₹4,00,000 | 6–10 weeks | Brands where the storefront is the differentiator |
| Shopify Plus / headless | ₹4,00,000 – ₹15,00,000+ | 10–20 weeks | High volume, complex catalogues, B2B, multi-market |
| Migration to Shopify | ₹50,000 – ₹3,00,000 | 3–8 weeks | Moving from WooCommerce, Magento or custom |
The recurring costs people forget
- Shopify subscription. Basic through Advanced covers most Indian SMEs; Plus is a different order of magnitude and only makes sense at real scale.
- Apps. The quiet budget killer. A typical Indian store runs 8–15 apps — reviews, subscriptions, upsells, shipping, WhatsApp, returns, analytics — commonly adding ₹4,000 to ₹20,000 per month. Audit this list every quarter; most stores are paying for at least three apps nobody uses.
- Payment gateway fees. Roughly 2% on most Indian gateways, varying by method. On ₹20 lakh monthly GMV that's ₹40,000 a month — more than most development retainers.
- Shopify transaction fee. Charged if you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments. Check whether it applies to you before choosing your gateway.
- Maintenance and support. ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 per month for updates, fixes, CRO tweaks and new sections.
- Content and photography. Product shoots, lifestyle imagery and copy for every SKU. Frequently underestimated by a factor of three.
What actually drives the development quote
- Design origin. Adapting a premium theme is a fraction of the cost of building from a Figma design.
- Catalogue size and complexity. 30 simple products versus 3,000 SKUs with size, colour and bundle variants are different projects entirely.
- Custom functionality. Product configurators, subscriptions, B2B pricing tiers, loyalty logic and made-to-order flows each add real development time.
- Integrations. ERP, accounting (Tally, Zoho), warehouse systems, shipping aggregators, CRM — each is a discrete piece of work.
- Multi-currency and multi-language for export-oriented brands.
- Migration data quality. Moving 5,000 products with clean data is straightforward. Moving them with inconsistent variants and no SKU discipline is not.
India-specific requirements to specify upfront
- GST-compliant invoicing with HSN codes, correct CGST/SGST/IGST split by delivery state, and B2B invoices carrying the buyer's GSTIN. This usually needs an app or custom work — Shopify does not do it natively.
- Cash on delivery, with COD verification to control return-to-origin losses.
- Pincode serviceability checks on the product page, not at checkout.
- Shipping aggregator integration (Shiprocket, Delhivery, Bluedart) with automated label generation and tracking.
- WhatsApp order updates — in India this outperforms email notifications substantially.
- RTO reduction flows, which for many Indian D2C brands matter more to profitability than conversion rate.
Where to spend and where to save
Worth paying for: product page design and speed, mobile experience, checkout flow, clean data structure, and GST invoicing done properly the first time. Safe to defer: elaborate homepage animation, a custom design before you've validated demand, Shopify Plus before you need it, and any app solving a problem you don't yet have.
The most expensive mistake we see is over-building before product-market fit. Launch on a customised premium theme, learn what customers actually do, then invest in custom development against evidence rather than assumption.
Choosing a partner
Ask for live stores they've built — not screenshots. Check those stores' mobile speed yourself. Ask who handles support after launch and what it costs. Confirm you own the store and the code. And get a fixed-scope quote: open-ended hourly billing on Shopify projects rarely ends well for the client.
